Hush Little Baby

While I was pregnant, I used to read that the mother and father's voice would become familiar to the baby while in utero and after the baby was born, studies would show that the mother and father's voice would calm the baby down.

I am finding that this is a true statement. My son has been going through a fussy phase-we blame it on teething since there is a tooth trying to come through.

There are two songs that I would often sing to my infant when he was just a wee little one. One is the song from "A Sound of Music" that goes Do, a deer, a female deer...ray, a drop of golden sun..." and the second is "Hush Little Baby." I tried to change things up a little bit and sing the words to Amazing Grace, but as soon as I started the new song, he started to cry again. I went back to "Hush Little Baby" and he stopped crying. Again, I tried to switch to another song and he started to cry. I'll try to add more song to our repertoire.

I had gotten an email from someone awhile ago when I was going through a difficult time after my son was born saying that she thought that I had the most soothing of voices and wished that she could record my voice for that very reason. She made me feel like I was a good mom and the ability to be a good mother. At that time, I couldn't see it nor could I feel like I would ever be a good mom.

And today, as I held my baby and sung to him and calmed him down, I felt like I knew and understood my baby's needs.
